Surrey, British Columbia stands as Metro Vancouver's second-largest municipality by population and holds the title for the most expansive city in the region by land area. Situated along the Canada–U.S. border on the southern bank of the Fraser River, Surrey covers roughly 316 square kilometres.

The municipality is structured around six key neighbourhood centres: City Centre/Whalley, Newton, Guildford, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, and South Surrey.

The city is encircled by a variety of nearby communities:

White Rock — Located to the immediate south, White Rock is an independent seaside municipality completely surrounded on its landbound sides by Surrey. It sits on the coast of Semiahmoo Bay.

Langley — Found directly to the east, this area spans two separate municipalities: the City of Langley and the larger Township of Langley.

Delta — Situated to the west of Surrey, Delta extends from the Fraser River all the way to the U.S. border. The Delta region encompasses three distinct communities: North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen.

New Westminster — Found on the other side of the Fraser River to the northwest, New Westminster connects to Surrey through major bridges and public transit routes.

Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Pitt Meadows — These three municipalities border Surrey to the north, sitting on the opposite bank of the Fraser River.

These communities exist within the unceded traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Katzie, Kwantlen, and Semiahmoo First Nations. Together, Surrey and its surrounding neighbours form a densely interconnected urban and suburban region, unified by extensive transportation infrastructure including the regional SkyTrain line that provides direct rail service from Surrey through New Westminster to Vancouver.
