Kitchener sits in Southern Ontario roughly 60 miles west of Toronto and serves as the administrative center for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. The area was first settled in the early 1800s by German-speaking Mennonite communities and was originally called Berlin. Following a 1916 public vote, the city officially adopted its current name, Kitchener. Covering about 137 square kilometers, the city had a population of approximately 257,000 according to the 2021 census.

Kitchener operates closely with two neighboring municipalities in a tri-city arrangement collectively called the "Tri-Cities." Waterloo, located directly north of the city, functions as a partner municipality despite having independent governance. The two cities are so intertwined that people commonly refer to them as the "Kitchener-Waterloo" or K-W twin cities. Cambridge lies to the south, having been established in 1973 after merging four former municipalities: Galt, Preston, Hespeler, and Blair. Together, these three urban centers form Ontario's fourth-largest metropolitan census area.

Outside the main urban centers, the Region of Waterloo encompasses four rural townships with strong local connections:

Woolwich (northeast) — home to the notable community of St. Jacobs

Wilmot (west) — includes Baden

Wellesley (northwest) — known for its extensive farming operations and historical Mennonite cultural roots

North Dumfries (south) — borders Cambridge

The entire region is linked by the Grand River and connected by Grand River Transit, a comprehensive public transportation system that provides an Ion light rail service throughout the urban areas.
