Ajax, Ontario is an active waterfront community in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area, approximately 36 kilometers east of downtown Toronto, and is one of the major municipalities within Durham Region. The town's name comes from the HMS Ajax, a Royal Navy cruiser from WWII, and the community originally grew around a large munitions plant during that decade. Today it has evolved into a progressive, multicultural suburban area known for its clean Lake Ontario shoreline, abundant parks, and modern commercial districts.

Ajax is bordered by four other municipalities in Durham Region and areas nearby:

Pickering (west) – A larger city with a busy downtown, a notable nautical village in Frenchman's Bay, and a major nuclear power station.

Whitby (east) – A historic commuter community that serves as the administrative center of Durham Region, known for a mix of commercial business parks and an inviting, heritage-style downtown.

Scarborough and Toronto – Though not directly adjacent, the Scarborough section of Toronto is located a short drive beyond Pickering. This proximity makes Ajax a popular, high-density residential spot for residents commuting into the city.

Strong transportation systems keep Ajax well connected: Highway 401 runs down the middle of the town and acts as a key economic corridor. Highway 407 handles regional toll traffic to the north, and the Ajax GO Train station provides efficient rail access to central Toronto and links the community to Ontario's wider transit network.
